Brakes: Essential for Your Vehicle’s Safety

The importance of brakes in controlling a vehicle cannot be overstated. Few things are more terrifying than pressing the brake pedal and realizing your car isn’t responding—it feels like sliding on ice.

Every driver expects to have full control over their vehicle at all times. If a mechanical issue occurs, at the very least, you want to be able to stop safely to avoid putting yourself and others at risk. Besides injuries, accidents also lead to higher car insurance premiums.

That’s why responsible drivers must know how to keep their braking system in excellent condition. Step one? Avoid unnecessary hard braking, which speeds up component wear.

Thanks to advances in automotive manufacturing, brake failure is now uncommon. In fact, only 0.44% of all car crashes in the U.S. are caused by brake failures—about 264,000 collisions annually. Modern vehicles also come equipped with sensors and warning systems that alert you when maintenance is needed.

Still, a 2022 study found that vehicles over 15 years old are 1.8 times more likely to crash due to brake issues. And for trucks, the situation is worse—30% of their accidents stem from brake failure.

Warning Signs

If your brake warning light turns on, it signals that something is wrong. Ignoring this can endanger everyone on the road.

Other symptoms you shouldn’t ignore include: a high-pitched squeal when braking, the vehicle pulling to one side, or increased stopping distance. If you notice any of these, visit a mechanic immediately—your brake system needs urgent attention.

Common Causes

Typical causes of brake issues include:

  • Brake fluid leaks
  • Faulty master cylinder
  • Booster problems

Stay alert to these signs—your safety and that of your passengers depends on properly functioning brakes.

Safe Brakes = Lower Insurance Costs

Driving a well-maintained vehicle not only keeps you safe but can also help reduce your insurance premiums.
